Since we got engaged I am excited and terrified at the same time about wearing the ring. Excited because it is so pretty and exactly like I wanted the ring to be – simple and sparkly. But terrified, I will lose the ring!
I haven’t worn a ring for years! So the question is:
How do you know if the ring fits perfectly?
When I got my ring, it was cold (December) and my fingers are cold all day, so the fit was very loose. I knew I had to re-size it. I went to the jewelery store and they gave me a metal ring tester. I went down by one size (from 6.5 to 5.5) and then was worried if I try a size smaller, I won’t get the metal test kit off my finger! So I decided on a 5.5. The downside, it will take 2 weeks to re-size the ring.
I never wear rings but giving away my ring right after I got it was tough! We started telling friends we are engaged and everybody wanted to see the ring. But it was at the jeweler, needless to say I couldn’t wait for the ring to come back!
Luckily they were fast and I got my ring withing 10 days back. Yeah! When I picked up the ring, it was in the evening and my hands were very cold again. It fits and it doesn’t fall off even when I shake my hands like crazy. But it still feels kind of loose.
As in all important situation, I googled it! Here are a few “facts” I found:
- watch out for summer since finger tends to swell
- different times of the day might make a difference
- wear it for a little while and see how you feel
- have another person try to take the ring off
I really like the last one and asked my fiance to take the ring off. And he couldn’t! I was so surprised, since it takes me 3 seconds to get the ring off. But I guess if you do it yourself you wiggle it off. So I felt a little better after that test.
But still the first 48 hours I stayed away from any openings, sinks, etc, even closed the sink while I showered!
In the meantime I started to calm down a little and feel more comfortable with wearing the ring. I also noticed it fits really well at night and in the morning, it only feels lose outside in the cold and in the evenings. But as I said, I get used to it.
Also, I went to a jewelry store to get it appraised, so my insurance would cover it in case I lose it. I would still freak out if anything happens to the ring, but at least we are covered.
Please tell me, how do I know if a ring is too loose?
How long did it take you to get used to wearing a ring? Have you ever lost a ring?
Do you wear your ring while working out?
My jeweler told me that the thicker the band is, the more you have to worry about swelling in the summer. Here in AZ summer, I take my ring off when I get home at night because my fingers swell and moisture gets trapped under my band (it is thick), but in the winter I used to always leave it on all the time! Lately I am starting to worry more about losing my diamond, and take it off for dishes, showers, etc. Even with insurance, it would suck to lose the original diamond!! I bet you will be good with your size. It should be a tiny bit loose during winter. Good luck! It is very pretty.
Thanks! My jeweler told me they can check the diamond for damage but also they can check and see if it is getting loose and then they can fix it. They recommend to go on an annual basis for a clean-up and check up.
